Everyday help, tailored to your household

Care looks different for every family. These are the things our caregivers help with most — pick a little, or a lot, and we build a routine around what you actually need.

Daily living (ADLs)

Steady, respectful help with the routines of the day.

  • Bathing and grooming support
  • Dressing and getting ready
  • Moving around the house safely
  • Eating and mealtime help

Companionship

Good company is care, too — nobody should spend the day alone if they don't want to.

  • Conversation, games, and reading together
  • Walks around the neighborhood
  • Accompaniment to activities and visits

Groceries & errands

Shopping trips together, or handled for you with your list.

  • Grocery shopping and putting food away
  • Pharmacy pickups and post office runs
  • Rides and accompaniment to appointments

Meal preparation

Simple, home-cooked meals made the way you like them.

  • Planning and cooking everyday meals
  • Following your recipes and preferences
  • Kitchen cleanup after meals

Light housekeeping

Keeping the home comfortable, tidy, and easy to live in.

  • Laundry and changing bed linens
  • Dishes, tidying, and taking out trash
  • Light cleaning of kitchen and bathroom

Respite for family

When family members are the caregivers, we step in so they can rest, work, or simply breathe.

  • Regular scheduled relief visits
  • Coverage for appointments and days off
  • Updates to family after each visit

Care that feels like company, not a service call

A lot of in-home care is simply being there — a familiar, friendly face who knows how you take your coffee, what stories you like to tell, and when you'd rather have a quiet afternoon. Our caregivers work alongside families, or directly with people who live alone, and treat every home the way they'd want their own family's home treated.

  • A consistent, matched caregiver — not a rotating cast of strangers
  • Routines built around your habits, your home, your pace
  • Honest updates for family members after visits

Errands, shopping, and getting out of the house

Staying independent at home is easier when the fridge is stocked and the errands get done. Your caregiver can shop with you, shop for you from your list, and help with the small trips that keep a household running — groceries, pharmacy pickups, the post office, and rides to appointments and social visits.

  • Shopping together or from your list — your brands, your budget
  • Help carrying bags in and putting everything away
  • A steady arm and company on outings

About us

Columbia Companion Care is run by Johanna Carbajal Huerta, based in Columbia, Maryland. Johanna coordinates the care and our team of caregivers provides personal, in-home support for people who want to keep living comfortably in their own homes — and for families who love someone in that situation and can't do it all themselves. Our work is the human, everyday side of care: routines, meals, errands, housekeeping, and company.

What we do

  • Help with daily living: bathing, dressing, grooming, meals, moving around the home
  • Companionship, conversation, walks, and accompaniment on outings
  • Groceries, errands, meal preparation, and light housekeeping
  • Respite visits so family caregivers can rest and recharge
  • Friendly reminders about appointments, routines, and daily schedules

What we don't do — so there's no confusion

  • We are not nurses or certified medical professionals, and we don't provide medical care
  • No injections or anything involving needles
  • No wound care, clinical assessments, or administering medication
  • No medical advice — for health questions, a licensed medical professional is the right call

If a need comes up that's medical, we'll say so plainly and help you find the right kind of professional for it. Keeping that line clear protects the people we care for — and it's the honest way to work.

Plan a visit

Sketch out the help you're picturing. When it looks right, send it to us and we'll talk through the details and the rate for that schedule — there's no charge and no commitment for asking.

Careers — work with us

We're growing. Columbia Companion Care is hiring kind, reliable caregivers to provide non-medical in-home care across Columbia and Howard County. Johanna runs the business and coordinates every placement — you'll always know who to call, and so will your clients.

Now hiring: In-Home Caregiver (non-medical)

You'll visit clients in their own homes and help with the everyday side of living at home — companionship, daily routines, meals, errands, and a tidy, comfortable house. This is non-medical care: no nursing, no injections, no wound care, no administering medication.

Hours are based on client schedules in the Columbia area — mornings, afternoons, evenings, and respite coverage. Tell us your availability in the application below and we'll match you with visits that fit.

Good to know before you apply

Pay, schedule, and start date are discussed directly with Johanna during the interview — nothing is promised on this page that hasn't been agreed with you first. If you're a caring person looking for meaningful, local work, we'd love to hear from you even if you're new to caregiving.

What you'll do

  • Help with daily living — bathing and grooming support, dressing, moving around the home safely, and mealtime help
  • Companionship — conversation, walks, games, reading, and accompaniment to activities and visits
  • Groceries and errands — shopping from a list, pharmacy pickups, and rides or accompaniment to appointments
  • Meal preparation and light housekeeping — cooking simple meals, laundry, dishes, and tidying
  • Respite visits so family caregivers can rest, work, or take a day off
  • Friendly updates to Johanna and the family after visits

What we're looking for

  • A warm, patient, dependable person who genuinely enjoys helping others at home
  • Caregiving experience is a plus — professional, agency, or caring for a family member all count. Tell us about it
  • Reliable transportation to get to clients' homes in Columbia and nearby Howard County communities
  • A phone you check regularly, and clear, kind communication with clients and families
  • CPR / First Aid is a plus — mention it if you have it
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. and willing to complete a background check before starting with clients

Why caregivers like working here

  • Small and local — you work directly with Johanna, not a call center or a big agency app
  • Consistent clients — build a real routine with the same households, visit after visit
  • Flexible scheduling — share your availability and we match visits to it where we can
  • Clear expectations — you'll know the tasks, schedule, and home before your first visit
